Color Revolution: Habitat for Humanity Partners With Top Designer and Luxury Paint Line, C2

New York, NY September 1, 2004 -- For the first time in its twenty-year history, Habitat for Humanity-NYC (the local affiliate of non-profit organization Habitat for Humanity International) will use color on the walls of thirteen new townhomes being built in the Mott Haven area of the Bronx. Habitat for Humanity-NYC agreed to bid farewell to plain white walls due to the encouragement of architect John Springer, the participation of interior designer DD Allen and a generous donation of luxury paint C2 Collections of Color from a trio of area dealers.

Springer, who first suggested the idea of color, originally became involved in this project as a volunteer through St. James Church. “I was working at the Bronx site when I began thinking about the fact that these homes were being built for specific families, yet they weren’t being differentiated to capture those families’ unique personalities,” explains Springer. “It occurred to me that bringing color into the mix would help individualize each of these thirteen homes.”

Springer approached DD Allen, a partner at Manhattan design firm Pierce Allen whose clients include Gwenyth Paltrow and Matt Damon, among others. “It was an exciting prospect to work with such a renowned organization,” says Allen. “The chance to help the families personalize and brighten their space was very rewarding.” Allen knew immediately that she wanted to specify C2 paint for this project. “C2 is not only an extremely high quality product,” Allen says, “but I love the range of the palette and the vibrancy of the colors.”

C2 is a luxury paint from The Coatings Alliance, a paint company created by a handful of independent paint dealers from across the US and Canada. Created with their customers in mind, C2 was designed to provide beautiful, complex color combined with easy application, excellent coverage and durability against UV, fading and scrubbing. It also offers unique color tools such as an 18”x24” paint chip called the Ultimate Paint Chip and the Take Home Chip, a 2.74”x4” swatch that is still seven times larger than the average. Both Chips are manufactured using the actual paint, not an ink simulation, so the color on the wall actually matches the color on the Chip.

Allen and her team of designers selected a few palettes that would work with other elements of the homes then met with the families to help them choose their colors. “At first the families were a bit hesitant thinking color would make the rooms look smaller,” explains Allen. “But by the end of their session with the designers they were so excited and one family has a little girl who can’t wait to move into her very own pink room!” Habitat for Humanity-NYC Executive Director Roland Lewis concurs, “Getting to choose colors for their new homes has made all the difference in the world to these families. They are so enthusiastic about this project.”

Getting luxury paint for thirteen, three-story homes was an obstacle easily overcome by a generous donation from three C2 dealers in New York and Connecticut. Dan Lavoie of Ray Roth’s in Danbury, CT was the first dealer to join the project. He then approached two brand-new C2 dealers—Capital Paint and Decorating in Brooklyn and Staten Island and McDermott Paint & Wallpaper in Greenwich, CT. Between the three of them they agreed to donate approximately 700 gallons of paint worth over $12,500. “It’s always a pleasure to see people working together for the common good,” says Lavoie.

Founded in 1984, Habitat for Humanity-NYC is a not-for-profit builder of affordable housing, and serves as a uniquely successful urban model of construction where volunteers build side-by-side with future homeowners. Habitat for Humanity-NYC now has over 150 homes completed in Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens, with plans to build hundreds more.

The Coatings Alliance formed in 1998 and became the first and only cooperative in the coatings field. This unique business model means every dealer-member is an owner of the company enjoying profit-sharing opportunities and roles in directing and influencing the company’s products. Since its founding, The Coatings Alliance has grown to represent over 40 members with nearly 60 storefronts in the US and Canada.
